Questa è stata la nostra prima esperienza di mobilità internazionale per un training course – avevamo entrambe già partecipato youth exchanges in passato – ed eravamo molto curiose di apprendere nuove competenze da spendere nel lavoro e nella vita in generale! Pensando a come definire questa esperienza in poche parole, possiamo dire che è stata breve (ancor più breve del previsto purtroppo…) ma molto intensa!
Questo TC “Not a step back” si teneva a Girona (Spagna) ed era incentrato su Human Rights Education e Education for Democratic Citizenship, temi al centro dei nostri interessi e studi e che quindi ci avevano subito spinto a partecipare!
Da Torino siamo partite in due e arrivate a Girona abbiamo scoperto che il nostro gruppo di partecipanti al TC contava circa la metà dei membri inizialmente previsti! Questo perché ci trovavamo in circostanze internazionali un po’ incerte dovute al rapido diffondersi dell’epidemia di Covid-19 in Italia e tutta Europa… Ripensando a quei giorni, ricordiamo un certo contrasto tra le notizie preoccupanti che ci arrivavano dal nostro paese tramite il web, e quella sorta di “isola di pace” costituita dalle attività quotidiane e dalla convivenza in ostello con il gruppo. Le giornate, infatti, trascorrevano con serenità insieme ai nostri compagni provenienti da Grecia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Spagna e Francia, tra le attività che occupavano gran parte del nostro tempo e i momenti di svago dei pasti e delle serate passate a passeggiare per la bellissima città e le lunghe chiacchierate!
I temi e le attività preparate dai nostri ospiti spagnoli erano impegnativi (quando finivamo la sera eravamo tutti molto stanchi), ma non mancavano mai di stimolare confronti e dibattiti tra i nostri punti di vista spesso molto differenti ma così interessanti! Molti saranno d’accordo nel dire che sia proprio questo il valore aggiunto di tali esperienze, e cioè la possibilità di conoscere coetanei di altri paesi e scoprire prospettive a volte diverse e altre volte così simili alle nostre… Il confronto con le diversità, infatti, permette di assimilare le nuove conoscenze e competenze da sperimentare poi nel proprio contesto di origine dopo il rientro, ma proprio l’incontro con gli altri diventa la principale fonte di ricchezza che poi ci si porta a casa al termine di quei giorni!

This quote describes quiet perfect how I felt about making the next step in my life and deciding to volunteer in Italy.
I want to tell you my story and therefore I need to start from the beginning: After living in different countries and feeling the freedom of life I went back into my old job, but very quickly I realised that this wasn’t my life any more. I was back in my “home country” and I felt trapped, trapped in my own daily life. Please don’t get me wrong, I love the country I was born in and I feel very privileged to be one of its citizen for a lot of reasons but I just wasn’t happy neither ready to be back yet…
…once you go back to your “home country”, going to another country feels like learning a foreign language that no one around you speaks, so there is no way to communicate to them how you actually feel and why you wanna leave your “home country” again after just being away for so long. All you want to do is leave, find a new project in your life, get to know a new culture, a new language and new people. For me it’s like a drug you are taking for a while but then you get used to it and you need to change to be able to feel alive again. So I was leaving again to find people who speak the same language as me. Not English or Spanish or Italian or German, but a language where others know what it is like to leave, change, grow, experience, learn, then go “home” again and feel more lost in your “home town” then you did in the foreign place you have visited or lived in.
So, I had a good job and a beautiful home, but I was bored, maybe even afraid that I will end up doing the same for the rest of my life. So, I left, yes maybe I was even running to find a place that would make me happier because it didn’t even took me a month to realise that I need to leave again. Did I find that place? For sure! Do I wanna stay forever? NO! Why not? Because I am a runner. I need to run and try new things before the daily hits me. It is not that I don’t appreciate this way of living but I always feel that there is more to explore before it is too late.
ABOUT MY TIME AND EXPERIENCES IN ITALY…
The last 11 months were one of the greatest experiences in my life. I got to meet and work with all these beautiful people from totally different cultures, I got to spend all this time in a country that is so rich on culture and history that you actually can’t get bored discovering it.
Living abroad in another culture than your own, always comes with challenges. Nothing and no one is perfect, so things happen you didn’t see coming and you don’t know how to handle them best. It’s about finding solutions and becoming more and more autonomous in your own life. Some things you have to face on your own and with my experiences I can say it makes you stronger, more independent and you start appreciating even more, everything you have. You grow as a person and your mind changes. You get a new perspective on life and also of yourself. You find out what is good and what is not good for you. You learn to speak up and step up for the things that matter the most to you and yes, even if you hurt or disappoint some others with some things, it is okay, because we are all humans and it is not about becoming all the same rather than staying true to yourself. It is about being different and learning how to live together and using these differences to make this world a better and not a worse place. I believe that we will never really find out why we got the gift to be on this earth but travelling, volunteering, meeting other people and cultures, anywhere in this world, makes me feel like I found a great purpose in my personal life.
Since I moved to Italy to start my SVE I have had mostly positive but also mixed feelings. I can’t really say that I had a cultural shock because I have been visiting Italy a lot of times before and every time I fell in love with this beautiful country. But also I discovered quickly that nothing is perfect and every country has its difficulties and some people would rather like to live in my country to be „safe“ when it comes to having good living conditions. But let me tell you that it is not about the money on your bank account at the end of the month. I am way more happy supporting this project and living with less than I ever had in Germany.
Our projects are so different of what I have been doing before and some of them challenge me a lot but also I would not want to have it any other way.
After being to Rome for the OAT and MTE I am even more appreciating the place I have found to support during my SVE and I see how lucky I got to have ended up surrounded by people who care so much about you from day one, without even really knowing you yet.
Of course you need to be able to afford this kind of work. Let me tell you, you will not be able to save a lot of money doing volunteering work but you will gain something way more important than that. Experiences, personal growth and most importantly you will learn to give and receive LOVE by simply giving your time.
Some things in Italy are of course different to my “home country” but that does not mean they are worse. Actually I even started to like them and got used to them. I can’t remember the last time I have been somewhere on time, I wasn’t even on time to pick up and welcome my Mom, when she came for a visit from Germany.

I am not questioning myself any longer why people risk there life and cross the street even if it is red, I think I almost died 4 times already doing the same while riding the bike. Speaking of riding the bike it is one of the best parts about living in Torino. The city is perfect to get around by bike and I feel the most free and relaxed when I have the opportunity to do so, which is almost every day.
I was able to have friends visiting me from Germany. I found a great friend in my flatmate. I was dancing on the street and much more….
Now I have only one month left in Italy and thinking about leaving this place already hurts a lot. Because the people I have met here made this place a home, for all of us, and leaving home always hurts. I have left so many places I actually thought it would get easier by the time but I am starting to think it never will, especially Torino is making it very hard to go. I will have to leave and I will feel lost again. This is the hardest thing of living abroad but it is also the very reason why we all run away!
So go! Leave! Live abroad! Run! Take new chances and live your life the way you want it! This is what I have done the last years and I am just getting started!!!

Ecco le testimonianze di alcune partecipanti allo scambio “Agricoolture”, che si è tenuto dal 21 al 26 ottobre 2019 ad Ormož, in Slovenia…un’esperienza all’insegna di amicizia, scoperta e capre golose.
Dai giochi di conoscenza alla progettazione di un nuovo business, dal prodotto finito al mondo che vi sta dietro: un’esperienza unica nel suo genere! Un viaggio nell’agricoltura accompagnati e guidati da appassionati, nuovi agricoltori imprenditori che hanno riscoperto il loro amore per la natura e scelto di farne una professione, docenti universitari che ci hanno introdotto alla loro scienza e innovazione, e amicizie internazionali che hanno reso lo scambio ancora più stimolante e ricco. Una volta visitato il Castello di Ormož, siamo scesi al fiume Drava che divide la Slovenia dalla Croazia. Abbiamo camminato lungo il lago di Ormož e siamo arrivati alla riserva naturale della laguna di Ormož (Ormoške lagune). Qui ci sono state date nozioni sulla riserva, di tipo idrico ma anche ornitologico e abbiamo potuto odorare le erbe del giardino botanico. Accanto al giardino non ho potuto resistere e ho fatto amicizia con degli esemplari di simpatiche capre slovene.

Per due settimane abbiamo lavorato a stretto contatto con la natura e siamo stati i Water Watcher del progetto.
Ci siamo divisi in diversi workshop, A. Si occupava di riprendere tutte le attività che svolgevamo, immortalando i momenti più belli e intensi. I., F. e N. si sono cimentati per una settimana nella costruzione di un sistema di irrigazione che fa in modo di annaffiare le piante goccia dopo goccia in modo da evitare ogni spreco. M. ha lavorato sodo con gli altri partecipanti per costruire una doccia da giardino, una doccia in mezzo alla natura con l’acqua scaldata dai raggi del sole. Infine A. e D. si sono occupati di misurare i parametri dell’acqua da diverse fonti come il lago, l’acqua piovana, l’acqua dal rubinetto etc e poi sono riusciti a costruire un’opera d’arte con i rifiuti.
Questa settimana ci ha resi ancora più sensibili sulle tematiche ambientali e ci ha aiutato a capire ancora di più come evitare gli sprechi.
La sintonia che c’era tra di noi sarà difficile da ritrovare altrove, siamo stati una squadra dall’inizio alla fine.

Erasmus Plus è un progetto finanziato dall’Unione Europea per permettere ai giovani di conoscersi e stringere legami, ma soprattutto per conoscere la cultura e le tradizioni di paesi diversi.
Alcuni progetti coinvolgono ragazze e ragazzi a partire dai 13/14 anni, anche se pochi, e di diversa durata; questa nostra esperienza è stata una di quelle.
Eravamo 5 persone per paese: un accompagnatore e quattro ragazzi. Ad OROSHAZA, piccola cittadina a circa due ore da Budapest, eravamo Ungheresi, Spagnoli, Portoghesi, Croati, Lettoni, Bulgari ed Italiani.
Sembra l’inizio di una barzelletta ma in realtà è stata la nostra esperienza molto bella e formativa, dove abbiamo conosciuto tantissime nuove persone, creando così una nuova grande famiglia composta da 40 giovani.
Grazie a questo progetto ora possediamo molte più conoscenze di quando siamo partiti. Abbiamo assaporato i tradizionali cibi ungheresi e imparato anche delle parole nelle altre lingue, costruendo un vero e proprio vocabolario comune. Abbiamo cercato di comunicare con l’inglese, ma anche ascoltando canzoni o guardando video.
“Alla fine posso dire di essere cresciuta almeno un po’ e di aver più padronanza nel parlare la lingue inglese e lo spagnolo.” dice Chiara.
“Mi è piaciuta molto questa esperienza in Ungheria, perché ho imparato a socializzare di più e il mio inglese è migliorato! Mi sono trovato molto bene, la struttura mi è piaciuta e anche il cibo non era male. Anche se ovviamente hanno una cultura gastronomica diversa dagli italiani, però era tutto ottimo!” racconta William, nella sua prima esperienza all’estero.
“Nel mio viaggio in Ungheria ho imparato molte cose come l’esporsi in pubblico, non nego che sia stato difficile nella lingua che non parlo tutti i giorni, ovvero l’inglese, ma mi è servita per aprirmi con altri ragazzi, e ho capito quanto una lingua sia importante per relazionarsi con il mondo. Ho migliorato anche il mio inglese, ho imparato qualche parola in alcune lingue. Ho visitato una nuova città, Budapest, molto bella e ho visto il famosissimo ponte, mi sono divertita moltissimo, con un accompagnatore simpaticissimo e dei nuovi amici italiani con cui ho condiviso il viaggio” e cosi ci confessa timidamente Alice anche lei nel suo primo progetto Erasmus+.
E così che dopo una magnifica giornata alle terme arriva l’ultimo giorno.
Momento dove i saluti diventano la conclusione del progetto. Arrivati ad un punto dove ci si conosce quasi come una vera famiglia e le lacrime e gli abbracci ci portano alla chiusura del nostro intero percorso.

Prima di iniziare il corso non sapevo cosa aspettarmi. Non ho mai partecipato ad una simile iniziativa. Appartengo ad un’organizzazione che lavora con i giovani e l’educazione non formale, ma io stesso non ho mai avuto l’opportunità di dedicarmi a questo tipo di attività perché il mio ruolo non è legato ai corsi formativi con i giovani. Mi sono iscritto al corso come una sfida personale, per prepararmi a nuove responsabilità, per imparare cose nuove e sperimentare nuove realtà, ma non avrei mai pensato che un progetto come questo sarebbe stato così trasformativo.
Il corso è previsto per un’intera settimana di immersione nel game design e nella riflessione su i giochi in generale, con componenti teoriche e un grande margine di creatività. Mentre i giochi sono al centro delle attività, l’interazione umana gioca un ruolo centrale nella formazione delle squadre e nella collaborazione per il raggiungimento degli obiettivi personali e di gruppo.
Se si partecipa ad un corso come questo, bisogna essere pronti ad impegnarsi, a mettersi in gioco, a coinvolgersi, a ascoltare gli altri ed a lasciarsi ascoltare, a lasciarsi trasportare dal flow dei propri compagni e dai giochi. Questo vi farà prendere coscienza di parti di voi stessi che non sapevate che esistevano, o che a malapena vi mettete in contatto, ma è solo una questione di lasciarsi giocare e godersi il momento proprio come nell’infanzia.
Ho imparato che i giochi fisici possono dare energia quando ci si sente bassi, che attraverso i giochi da tavolo si possono creare universi interi e divertirsi molto, che non è necessario competere per divertirsi, e ho confermato che c’è sempre una parte educativa di ogni gioco di cui si può approfittare.
Oltre a incontrare alcune persone fantastiche provenienti da molti paesi e iniziare a sviluppare reti per ulteriori collaborazioni, ho preso alcuni insegnamenti che possono aiutare me ed altri per progetti futuri.
1. La game-based learning è un ottimo modo per imparare: attraverso i giochi possiamo trasmettere valori e conoscenze che possono essere utilizzati sia per l’educazione formale che non formale.
2. L’interscambio europeo è un’esperienza molto arricchente, uscire dalla solita routine ed entrare in un programma immersivo con i colleghi internazionali crea una sinergia culturale e didattica che è senza dubbio utile per replicare in progetti domestici.
3. La società può trarre grandi benefici dalla game-based learning: se cambiamo la nostra mentalità riguardo a molte delle nostre questioni sociali, e cominciamo ad aggiungere un po’ di giochi nelle soluzioni proposte, possiamo creare non solo risultati più efficaci ma anche cittadini più impegnati per le sfide più comuni del nostro tempo.
Spero che tutti coloro che lavorano con i giovani e l’istruzione possano partecipare almeno una volta a un progetto come questo, è un’opportunità di crescita umana e professionale se lo si abbraccia in questo modo.

Sometimes you need to go out, discover what’s beyond, travel, get to know places and recognize yourself.
For me Rosario, a 21-year-old Spanish girl was not the first time I felt this, and I decided to travel abroad. My first time was two years ago with an Erasmus to France that takes 4 months. When I finished this experience, I knew that my next destination would be Italy.
It was all about destiny, a trip in which I visited my cousin who was also doing Erasmus, made me know about this association and a large part of their volunteers. And I thought, this is my chance, I’m going to get in touch with the association to see if they have a place for me this summer and that’s how it was.
Telling the story like this is not funny. So… I will tell you what exactly happened:
It was 21 of March at 9.19 a.m. and I messaged Leo, one Italian boy that was with me in France, telling him that I was thinking of going to TURIN to visit my cousin in her Erasmus, so maybe in the way or something I could meet him. he started to write a lot of happy emojis and OMGs, and then he told me… I’m in TORINO since September…
at first, I didn’t understand why he was so exciting… so I look in internet, distance between Torino and Turin…. and yes… maybe you think that I’m stupid because is the same… but… I didn’t know it…. finally, my cousin was living 15 minutes waking from the house of Leo… and… I decided to go to visit her like I told you before.

This experience, which has lasted 2 months, has provided me with a lot of personal as well as professional skills. Personal as you can imagine because you grow up, you become independent, you live with people from different countries, convivial life, you learn to manage your money and your time …
And professional because in my case I am studying Social Education and this experience has helped me to work with different groups: young people, people in exclusion, homeless people … in projects such as Cooking lab, Food Pride & Panacea, Language club and other projects I’ve done together with another association (Madiba) like Camping Jo, Spazio Giovanni Beinasco and video editing.
At the same time, I have been able to learn and see how an association works from within, bureaucratic, economic, communication, project management, meetings, organization, things that I learned that will surely help me in my future work for sure.
I have to say that sometimes you do not do very well with the language, I knew nothing about Italian when I arrived … But it is worth it, it is worth living 2 months your way, see how little by little your mentality undergoes changes, as little by little you feel more mature.
It’s worth it because such an opportunity you don’t have every day. I took that train that passed through the station without predisposing it, and you? Would you take it?
P.S: Who said that with 21 years I could not learn to ride a bike? If I told you … my experience riding a bike in Turin, I would give for another blog …

Forse, che sia in grado, combinando tradizione e innovazione, di produrre le materie prime necessarie a sfamarci in maniera sana e rispettosa dell’ambiente.
Ed ecco che “Bio, Eco e Green” diventano i termini più ricercati (e abusati?!) tanto dai produttori, quanto dai consumatori.
Ma quanto ne sappiamo realmente?
Questo scambio ti offre la possibilità di incontrare, nella splendida cornice naturale della piccola città di Ormož, giovani provenienti da Slovenia, Grecia, Repubblica Ceca e Italia, con cui confrontarti sulle sfide e le opportunità che caratterizzano il settore primario contemporaneo. E non solo!
Sono previsti workshop direttamente “sul campo”, attività di educazione non formale, attività all’aperto, visite di studio, degustazioni e incontri con giovani imprenditori locali di successo nel settore agricolo, pronti a condividere i retroscena della propria produzione.
